Multispectral Fiber Spectroscopy for Process Control In-Line

Process monitoring and control brings economic benefits together with possible research insights. The best way to implement process analytical technology (PAT) tools is through in-line and online sampling methods, which save qualified human resources and time by providing continuous measurement results to monitor critical process parameters in real time. Optical spectroscopy, being more selective, and fiber optics, being more robust, make such control possible.

Here we present our latest achievements in robust fiber optic solutions for optical analysis of liquid, solid and gaseous media composition for remote process control in-line using all key spectroscopy methods: Raman, ATR-absorption, Reflectance, Fluorescence, Transmission and Transflection. Each spectroscopic technique can be implemented in broad spectral range (UV, VIS, NIR and Mid-Infrared) by using different fibers, e.g. UV-ATR, mid-infrared ATR, NIR-Transmission, MIR-Transflectance and others depending on the industrial application. Advanced fiber combi probes have been designed to use two or more spectroscopic methods in critical process points, e.g. Mid-FTIR+Fluorescence, Raman+Near-IR, Raman+Mid-FTIR, etc. – providing the synergy benefit from different spectral data fusion for better selectivity and accuracy in media composition analysis. The process can be investigated in the laboratory using all kinds of spectroscopy techniques to develop a customized sensor based on a few, but key informative spectral bands can be developed - with reduced size and cost, and with better performance. In case of complex samples and heterogeneous media, an optical analysis with combination of different spectroscopic methods is required to achieve better accuracy.

Advances in precision mechanics, optics, and sealing technologies allow to use fiber optic probes for process control in harsh environments. Fiber probes can provide process monitoring in a variety of applications such as with wide temperature range from -150°C to +250°C, high pressure up to 200 Bar or in vacuum, vibrations, aggressive liquids or gases, electromagnetic fields including microwave and hard radiation. Fiber optic probes for medical applications are usually of a compact design and can even be in the form of a mono-fiber probes with a diameter less than 200µm for Raman or other spectroscopy that provide tissue diagnostics.

On-site Industrial Gas Generation & Recycling

On-site industrial gas generation and recycling provide industries with a sustainable, efficient solution for managing gas needs. This approach involves generating gases like nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen directly at the point of use, reducing reliance on external suppliers and the risks associated with gas transportation. Through on-site generation, companies achieve a continuous, uninterrupted gas supply that enhances operational efficiency and reduces costs. Integrated gas recycling systems further boost sustainability by capturing and purifying gases for reuse within the same facility, minimizing emissions and waste. Industries benefit from decreased energy consumption, lower carbon footprints, and improved safety standards due to reduced storage and handling of pressurized gas cylinders. On-site gas generation and recycling represent an innovative, environmentally conscious approach to industrial gas management, aligning with global sustainability goals while offering cost-effective, scalable solutions tailored to a wide range of industrial applications.

On-line Extended Refinery Gas Analysis using a Process Gas Chromatograph with Capillary Chromatography

Refineries worldwide face the challenge of conducting complex stream analyses essential for ensuring product quality and maximizing profitability. However, obtaining real-time, high-quality data on these streams is a persistent challenge. Process gas chromatographs (PGCs) offer a solution by providing critical online refinery gas analysis, which is crucial for the hydrocarbon process industry. Yet, traditional PGCs often fall short due to their reliance on packed columns and isothermal ovens, limiting their utility. As a result, plants frequently depend on laboratory gas chromatographs (GCs) either as backups or for quality checks, and in some cases, laboratory GCs are the only option due to technological limitations. In response to these challenges, we have developed an advanced PGC capable of delivering repeatable capillary chromatography, equipped with pressure programming and temperature-programmable ovens, designed specifically for extended refinery gas analysis.
